Visual artist Elwah Gonzales bares her story on creating art
Ga Pamisok Samtang Ga Piyong ang Mata (Blinking While the Eyes Are Closed) explores the strange space between dreaming and waking. In this exhibition, Elwah Gonzales turns fragments of her dreams into paintings. The works come from images and feelings she remembered after sleep, moments that seemed unfinished and continued to linger in her mind.
As Gonzales writes, “Some dreams leave a strong impression even after waking, as if they are unfinished moments that continue to linger in the mind.” These paintings begin from those lingering impressions. Colors, shapes, and quiet scenes translate the atmosphere of dreams rather than tell a clear story.
The exhibition reflects that brief moment when the body has already woken up but the mind is still moving through dreamlike images. Each painting becomes a small glimpse of something once seen in sleep, a feeling or vision remembered long enough to take form on the canvas before it slowly fades.
